From Canvas to Clothes: Should you work with a Print on Demand Partner?
Coming off the heels of Miami Art Week, I'm reflecting not just on how fun and overwhelming seeing all the art was, but also how incredible it felt to WEAR the art! My friends and I donned my handmade print on demand outfits featuring my original art and that of the art masters.

We got so many comments and questions from fellow artists and art lovers that I wanted to share more about Print on Demand services and the partner I use to bring my creations from canvas to clothes and more. If you're considering Print on Demand services, here are some considerations
For over 5 years now I've been using Printful, a leading print-on-demand service, steps in, offering artists an innovative platform to transform their art into wearable creations. Here's why artists should consider Printful as their go-to for bringing their artwork to life in the fashion world.

If you're considering using a POD partner, here are some positive aspects:
1. Seamless Integration of Art and Fashion: Printful bridges the gap between art and fashion, allowing artists to imprint their unique designs onto a wide range of apparel. From t-shirts and hoodies to hats and bags, the possibilities are endless. This integration not only expands the artist's canvas but also brings their creations into the everyday lives of people, making art a part of their personal expression.
2. Quality that Speaks Volumes: One of the biggest concerns for any artist is the quality of the reproduction of their work. Printful understands this and ensures that each piece of wearable art is a testament to the artist's original vision. With advanced printing technology and high-quality materials, every detail of the artwork is captured, ensuring that the end product is as striking as the original piece.
3. Freedom from Inventory Hassles: For many artists, the logistical challenge of producing, storing, and shipping their creations can be daunting. Printful eliminates these hurdles by offering a print-on-demand model. This means that artworks are only printed when an order is placed, freeing artists from the need to invest in inventory and allowing them to focus on their creative process.
4. Global Reach, Local Touch: With facilities across the globe, Printful allows artists to reach an international audience without worrying about shipping complexities. This global reach, combined with the local production of orders, ensures that customers receive their wearable art quickly and efficiently, no matter where they are in the world.
5. Eco-Friendly Options: In an era where sustainability is key, Printful offers eco-friendly printing options. Artists who are conscious about their environmental impact can choose sustainable materials and eco-friendly printing methods, aligning their art with their values.
7. Empowering Artists with Tools and Support: Printful goes beyond just printing and shipping. They provide artists with tools and resources to help them succeed. From mockup generators to marketing tips, artists are equipped with everything they need to turn their art into a successful wearable brand.

As with any POD service, here are some risks to consider:
1. Packaging is plain: While Printful offers extra stuffing services for an additional monthly fee, the default (free) option means your colorful works will come in very basic packaging. Most customers don't mind but if they're used to that personalized "Etsy-like" touch, they might be disappointed.
2. Impatient Customers: Even though you (obviously) should state everywhere that your works are made to order, there are no shortage of impatient people in the world. In our Amazon-Prime/ Shein world of fast fashion and fast shipping, don't be surprised if you get some "it's been 3 days, where is my outfit?!" messages.
3. Control: While IMHO the convenience of having a partner manage your inventory and process far outweighs the risk, it's worth noting that you're placing a lot of trust and good faith in your brand reputation if you rely on a partner to ship direct to your customers without your own eyes as quality control. I've worked with some shady POD partners in the past that have shipped bad stitching, missing buttons, or misprints without batting an eye, and just one order can destroy your reputation. Luckily I've found with Printful not only do they have rigorous quality control steps, but they're one of the best with customer service and will always make things right if something (rarely) goes wrong.
In 5+ years of trying dozens of POD partners, I'm most trusting and delighted with Printful. Have any of you tried them or other POD services? Would love to hear your comments.
